Kristin Turner's Soft Ginger Cookies

Makes 2 dozen

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons ground ginger
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 Tablespoon water
1/4 cup molasses
2 Tablespoons white sugar for rolling cookies

Sift flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt.
In large bowl, cream butter and 1 cup sugar till light and fluffy.
Beat in egg, then stir in water and molasses.
Gradually stir in dry ingredients.
Roll into balls and roll in remaining sugar.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet and flatten them slightly.
Bake at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes. Let cool on cookie sheet for 5
minutes and then transfer to wire rack. Store in airtight container.
